Heat pumps for home heating and air conditioning need little introduction these days. The efficiency of any heat pump varies depending on factors such as the weather and quality of the unit, however all heat pumps sold in New Zealand are tested to a standard available online at www.energyrating.gov.au.

A correctly specified heat pump will provide the lowest cost way to heat your house in winter and the only way to cool in summer.
How it works
A heat pump does no physical heating, all the heat comes from squeezing a gas in exactly the same way a bicycle pump gets hot when pumping up a tyre, the cooling effect comes from letting compressed gas expand - the good news is that the heating (or cooling) only uses about a third of the usual amount of energy. Most heat pumps sold these days are fitted with an inverter drive, when the area to be heated (or cooled) is near the desired temperature the compressor in the outside unit runs slower and uses less power.
How to size a unit
As a guide 1kw of heating is required for every 10 sq meters of floor area therefore
- small living room of 4 x 5 can use the smallest unit (3.4kw).
- a large open plan area of 10 x 7 would need either a 6.8kw or an 8kw unit.
